Wave-compensating Drilling Rig


With the increasing of demand for refined offshore investigation and surveying and especially marine CPT service, the market demand for marine wave-compensating drilling rigs increases tremendously. Qingdao Binhai Investigation and Surveying Co., Ltd. (abbr. as “QBIS” or “The company” hereafter)  summarized nearly 30 years of experience in offshore drilling exploration, referred to advanced domestic and foreign technologies, and organized a backbone team to develop and manufacture a new type of modular wave-compensating drilling rig (Operational capability of offshore drilling: water depth + borehole depth can reach 600 m) as well as a new type of customized wave-compensating drilling rig (Operational capability of offshore CPT: water depth + borehole depth can reach 300 m).

The wave-compensating drilling rig system includes derrick, elevation and feeding system, elevation compensating system, power head, clamping and unclamping device, winch system, driller house and its supporting facilities, hydraulic power station system, mud pumps and its supporting facilities, mud tank system, and so on. The supporting system for CPT operation includes submarine baseplate and its elevation system, moon pool cover and its transfer system, and CPT drill rods and drill bits.

The drilling rig is characteristic of drilling downward with a power head, and compared with the traditional drilling rigs, it has the advantages as follows:

Good convenience in transportation and installation;

High safety in offshore operation;

High coring rate and accurate data;

Strong resistance against wind and waves and hence a high operation rate;

Wide adaptability and applicability in various marine geological investigation projects related to offshore wind power, marine geology, bridge, wharf and tunnel, etc.

So far, they have been applied to a number of professional exploration ships, and made outstanding contributions to the successful completion of relevant investigation projects, and hence widely recognized and praised by different investigation units and owner units.

Its highly-efficient working mode has greatly improved the execution efficiency of the projects, effectively shortened their construction period, and hence achieved considerable advantages in time and cost for the company. Its wide range of application enables it to operate stably under various geological conditions, effectively reducing risks and uncertainties. In actual operation, its wave compensation technology makes the drilling process more stable, greatly improves the quality of drilling exploration and the accuracy of data acquisition, and contributes significantly to the smooth progress and successful accomplishment of the projects.
